Ansys Charge Plus: Air ESD Into Calibration Target Tutorial

Written by Adel Benleulmi | Nov 19, 2025 4:27:15 AM

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) simulations are essential for understanding how high-voltage transient events develop, propagate, and interact with nearby structures or devices. Ansys EMC Plus and Charge Plus are powerful tools that allow engineers to model and analyze ESD events with high accuracy by solving Maxwell’s equations. In this blog, we will go through the air ESD into calibration target tutorial available within the Charge Plus examples.

Overview

The air ESD into calibration target simulation is an FDTD application that models the discharge of a high-voltage ESD gun into a calibration target using nonlinear air chemistry. In this example, the ESD gun is configured for 15 kV and discharges into a 2 Ω calibration target.

The workflow includes the following steps:

  • Defining the simulation domain and arcing region

  • Defining the voltage source

  • Assigning material properties

  • Defining circuit components and target resistance

  • Defining current, voltage, animation, and 3D probes

  • Setting up the variable grid

  • Meshing the model and running the simulation

The results of the charging and gap voltages are shown below:

The expected ESD waveform, captured using the current probe, shows the discharge behavior and timing.

The animation below shows how the E-field builds up at the gun tip and drops after the arc occurs.

Finally, the video below walks through all the steps in detail, and the model is available in the downloadable resources.
