Ansys Discovery Refine Mode: Mastering Meshing Methods

This blog post explains the meshing methods available in the Refine mode for advanced CFD simulation in Ansys Discovery. The previous post discussed the meshing techniques available in the Explore mode.

Advanced Meshing Techniques in Refine Mode

When using Ansys Discovery, Refine mode offers more meshing techniques than Explore mode. These techniques can improve the accuracy and efficiency of simulations. With advanced meshing strategies, users can optimize the mesh to meet specific needs and requirements. 

You still have the option to adjust the mesh size for the entire domain using the Global Fidelity tab, fidelity slide bar, and Size Preview. However, there are some new meshing schemes available under Global Fidelity, such as the Curvature and Proximity features, which are similar to those found in Fluent Meshing. These new features improve the accuracy of the model's meshing. Additionally, the Local Fidelity tab allows you to adjust the mesh size in the area of interest, similar to the Local Size feature found in Fluent Meshing.

 

 

In the Refine mode, you have access to a feature that allows you to view the mesh and access mesh statistics. These statistics include element and node counts, as well as mesh quality metrics like aspect ratio, orthogonality, and skewness. You don't need to solve the model to see the mesh and gain an in-depth understanding of its statistics.

 

  

There are various meshing methods available in the Refine mode. We can use Polyhedral mesh (Fluent meshing) along with the Tetrahedral mesh. Implementing Poly meshing can significantly reduce the number of elements and nodes, ultimately saving a lot of running time.

 

 

Computation Methods

Simulation in Refine mode can be executed either on the CPU in the traditional computing method or take advantage of GPU computing known as LiveGX. The native GPU offers a significant boost in performance, utilizing the abundant memory on the graphics card instead of relying solely on the CPU on the motherboard.  

 

 

 

A Case Study 

We utilized various meshing techniques and methods in Refine mode to simulate the cooling of a room using Ansys Discovery software. In the video below, we demonstrate how to adjust mesh size, use Tetra and Poly meshes, find meshing statistics, and determine the meshing quality metrics as available in Fluent. Additionally, we compared velocities and temperatures with the solution in the Explore mode in Ansys Discovery.

Summary

Ansys Discovery provides a range of meshing techniques and strategies in its Refine mode, which are not accessible in the Explore mode. With the help of various meshes and local fidelity control, the accuracy and reliability of results can be enhanced, while reducing computational costs and resources. These meshing features make CFD simulation in Ansys Discovery more similar to that of running it in Ansys Fluent.
