Shielding effectiveness quantifies a material or enclosure's ability to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) by both blocking external electromagnetic radiation and containing potential emissions from the enclosed electronic system.
In this blog, we will explore one of the automated workflows of EMC Plus, which, with just one click, allows you to:
- Create the simulation domain
- Set boundaries for the simulation
- Mesh the enclosure geometry, preparing it for analysis
- Set up an external plane wave source
- Generate a box probe inside the enclosure
- Initiate the simulation run
Once the simulation is complete, the software will plot the frequency-dependent shielding effectiveness.
Simulation Workflow
First, ensure that the materials are defined and your geometry is ready.
Under the EMA3D tab, click the arrow below the Shielding Effectiveness button to access the settings and initiate the workflow with the desired number of divisions, which define the mesh size. By default, the Shielding Effectiveness automatic workflow applies a minimum of 50 spatial steps across the domain to mesh the geometry. In this example, 35 divisions are set, providing a good FDTD mesh while keeping the simulation runtime short. Inspecting the FDTD mesh is a good practice, as it helps define the number of divisions needed for optimal balance between accuracy and simulation time.
If the default number of 50 divisions is sufficient for your model, simply click the Shielding Effectiveness button to start the simulation.
With Run on Complete selected, clicking the Complete button will automatically run the shielding effectiveness simulation.
You can also review and adjust the simulation parameters in the simulation tree, including the solution domain, which defines the lowest and highest frequency values, the polarization of the incident plane wave, and the probe settings.
Viewing the Results
After the simulation is complete, navigate to Results > Domain, right-click on Field Probe 1, and select Compute Field Statistics. This will compute the electric field average, minimum, and maximum values, along with the shielding effectiveness. Next, select the default Plane Wave Source file and choose the desired analysis directions. Once the calculation is finished, go to 2D Plots, right-click on Field Probe 1 - Shielding Effectiveness, and click Show to display the shielding effectiveness plot.
You can control the shielding effectiveness plot settings and display the results on a linear scale.
