Coaxial Cable Simulation in Ansys HFSS

Written by Adel Benleulmi | Jun 13, 2025 4:39:40 PM

Coaxial cables are widely used in applications such as telecommunications, aerospace, and high-speed digital systems. Accurately modeling their behavior is essential for ensuring optimal performance in RF systems. In this blog, we will walk through the process of setting up a coaxial cable simulation in HFSS and plotting the insertion loss, return loss, and electric field distribution.

Simulation Workflow

In this example, we will start by creating a coaxial cable with the following dimensions:

  • Inner conductor radius: 1 mm
  • Outer conductor inner radius: 3 mm
  • Outer conductor thickness: 0.1 mm
  • Cable length: 30 mm

Copper is assigned to the inner conductor and aluminum to the outer conductor. The dielectric region is defined using PTFE, which has a relative permittivity of 2.1 and a loss tangent of 0.00022.

The simulation is set up using a Driven Modal solution type. Wave ports are assigned to both ends of the coaxial line to excite the model, and a frequency sweep from 1 GHz to 20 GHz is defined to evaluate its broadband performance.

Once the simulation is complete, the results are used to plot the return loss and insertion loss across the frequency range.

Additionally, the electric field distribution within the dielectric is plotted and animated.

The video below walks through these steps in detail, and the model shown is available in the downloadable resources.
