The meshing methods available in Ansys Discovery for analysis in Explore mode will be covered in this blog post. We will go over the meshing techniques in the Refine mode in the next blog.

Understanding Meshing in Discovery Explore Mode

Meshing is the process of dividing a geometric model into small elements to simulate the behaviour of the system under different conditions. This is done by creating a mesh that discretizes the geometry, allowing you to analyze and solve complex problems. In the Explore mode of Ansys Discovery, you have access to meshing techniques that can help you check the impact of mesh size on the simulation results. It is essential to understand the workings of these techniques and when to apply them to ensure the accuracy and reliability of simulations.

When you start the simulation in Explore mode, Ansys Discovery will automatically mesh the model invisibly. However, you can adjust the mesh size using the fidelity sliding bar located at the bottom of the screen or by accessing the fidelity approach from the Global Fidelity tab in the Simulation section. You can preview the mesh size in the Size Preview tab, and hovering over the geometry will display the size. The mesh fidelity size is also shown on the fidelity slide bar.

Advanced Meshing Technique in Discovery Explore Mode

It is not currently possible to refine the mesh size in a specific area of the domain using the Global Fidelity feature. This feature only allows mesh refinement for the entire domain. Unfortunately, the Local Fidelity feature is not available in the Explore mode for Ansys Discovery users. However, if you are using Ansys 2024R1, you can take advantage of the Local Fidelity feature as a Beta option. This feature allows you to fine-tune the mesh to capture important details and optimize the simulation process, resulting in better outcomes.

The video Part 1 shows you how to enable this Beta option and meshing techniques in Explore mode.

Case Studies and Practical Applications

We used Ansys Discovery to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer for room cooling. This helped us understand various meshing techniques in Explore mode. In the video part 2, we will show you how to adjust mesh size, analyze the impact of meshing on room temperature and velocity, and assess computational costs and accuracy using the Global Fidelity and Size Preview tabs, as well as the fidelity slide bar. In this example, we will compare the Custom (advanced) approach's meshing size to the other approaches.

Summary

Ansys Discovery provides various meshing techniques and strategies to enhance simulation results. Understanding meshing in the Explore mode is crucial for accurate and reliable simulations. By choosing the appropriate meshing technique and analyzing practical case studies, engineers can achieve better simulation accuracy, reduce computational costs, and make informed design decisions.
