Ansys Discovery is a versatile tool that provides a single and interactive workspace for creating models, exploring simulation designs, and analyzing solutions. It allows users to create and modify geometry using direct modeling technology, define simulations, and interact with results in real-time. Discovery supports structural, fluid flow, thermal, and electromagnetic designs, offering an intuitive approach to simulation. Users can get started with samples, tours, and tutorials, optimize topology, monitor solutions, and evaluate defined variations. The software offers three stages: Model, Explore, and Refine, allowing users to focus on different aspects of the design process. The Explore stage provides quick insights with real-time results, while the Refine stage enables simulation of more complex physics using Ansys Fluent and Ansys Mechanical solvers.
Challenges in HVAC System Design
Optimum heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) design is a challenging task considering the wide range of outside environment conditions to maintain comfort inside a building. The designer needs to
1. right size of equipment with unique enclosures,
2. ensure proper flow distribution throughout the building for thermal comfort,
3. maintain indoor air quality.
Solution using Ansys Discovery
The solution for quick design and optimization of a HVAC ducting is achieved by employing a two-step approach within a single software:
1. On-the-fly design assessment and optimization: the physics based air and heat flow simulation using discovery solver allows engineers to test ideas in real time.
2. Final concept validation: high fidelity simulation of the new design leveraging flagship technology.
In this example, we will focus on the on-the-fly design and analysis capability of Discovery. The air will be moved through a HVAC ducting system as shown below.
Fig. 1 Model schematics
Our goal is to improve the preliminary design shown in Fig. 1 so that a target amount of flow distribution is achieved at the two different outlets without going over the pressure drop allowed. The preliminary design may be created either in Discovery or be imported from a different CAD modeler. In the video, we will add design features and calculate flow distribution and pressure drop on-the-fly.
Benefits of using Ansys Discovery
Engineers using the Discovery workflow get:
1. Reduction in product development time owing to the integrated design and validation process,
2. Easy evaluation of what-if scenarios with design changes.
