Challenges in Product Shipping
Many products require to be maintained at a desired temperature range before consumption. This becomes a challenge during the shipping/storage cycle. Manufacturers need to design packing not only to minimize storage space (i.e. maximize packing density) but also to design cooling methods to protect product life.
Engineering Solution
The common solution to the packaging problem described above is optimization of insulation and cooling media using software. The cooling media is typically wet/dry ice, gel packs among others. An accurate and fast transient temperature prediction software is the key to avoid costly physical tests.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods are the most common physics based approaches to model transient thermal problems which may include phase change (like melting). Manufacturers routinely use such simulations to predict product temperature history through out the shipping/storage journey.
Ansys Solution Benefits
Several different physics such as material properties, thermal transients and phase change have to be captured for reliable simulation results. Ansys Fluent offers industry validated and accurate models to capture all of these physics. Industrial users of Ansys enjoy the benefits of reduction of physical testing, reduction of product loss and examining various shipping environments including extremes.
